Muhammad Hidayatullah, OBE (17 December 1905 - 18 September 1992) was the first Muslim Chief Justice of India. He served as the Acting President of India on two occasions and was also the Vice-President of India for one complete term.

Early life and education


  • Finished Did primary education from Government High School, Raipur in 1922.
  • Was nominated as the Phillip's Scholar in the Morris College, Nagpur in 1926.
  • Admitted to B.A. at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1927. Secured 2nd order of merit and was awarded Gold Medal for his performance in 1930.
  • Elected and served as the President of the Indian Majlis at Cambridge in 1929.
  • Pursued English and Law Tripos from the Lincoln's Inn.
  • Secured place of Barrister-at-Law in 1930.

Professional life


  • Practiced as Advocate at the Nagpur High Court from 1930 to 1946.
  • Served as Government Pleader between 1942 and 1943.
  • Served as the Advocate General of Central Provinces and Berar (now Uttar Pradesh) from 1943 to 1946.
  • Conferred with Order of British Empire in 1946.
  • Served as Judge of Nagpur High Court from 1946 to 1954.
  • Elevated as the Chief Justice of the Nagpur High Court in 1954. Served till 1956.
  • Appointed as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh on November 1, 1956. Served till November 28, 1956.
  • Elevated as Judge to the Supreme Court of India on December 1, 1958.
  • Took oath as the Chief Justice of India on February 28, 1968.
  • Retired on December 16, 1970.

  • He served as Member of the Nagpur Municipal Committee from 1931 to 1933.
  • He served as Member of the Nagpur University's Executive and Academic Councils between 1934 to 1953.
  • He taught at the University College of Law from 1935 to 1943.
  • He served as Member of the Nagpur Improvement Trust from 1943 to 1945.
  • He was a Member of the Nagpur Bar Council between 1943 to 1946.
  • He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Nagpur University between 1949 to 1953.
  • He served as the Chief Commissioner of the Madhya Pradesh Bharat Scouts and Guides between 1950 and 1953.
  • He was a Member at the Faculty of Law at (1) Sagar University, (2) Court Vikram University, and (3) Aligarh Muslim University in 1950s.
  • He served as Acting President of India in 1969 being ex officio Chief Justice of India.
  • He was elected as the Vice President of India in August 1979. Served till 1984.
  • He served as Acting President of India in 1982 as ex officio Vice President of India.
  • He served as the Chief Scout of the All India Boy Scouts Association from 1982 to 1992.

  • Justice Hidayatullah was the first Muslim Chief Justice of India.
  • Justice Hidayatullah was the first and the only person to have served in all the three offices of the Chief Justice of India, President of India and the Vice President of India.
  • Justice Hidayatullah was the first Indian to have successfully completed a tripos degree.
  • In his memory, the Hidayatullah National Law University was established in 2003 in his home state (now) Chattisgarh in Raipur.
