West Bengal CM to skip CPI-M Politburo meet

The important Politburo meeting of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) will be held on Saturday where the poor performance of the party in the West Bengal municipal elections is expected to be discussed.

However, CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat denied that the Politburo will discuss the West Bengal elections. But West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will stay away from the meeting.

The CPI-M is seeking to scotch speculation on just why the West Bengal Chief Minister has chosen to avoid the Politburo meeting.

"It's not a question of avoiding the Politburo meeting," West Bengal State Secretary Biman Bose said.

The Left Front's embarrassing show in the municipal elections, is expected to be debated, but the man under whom the elections were fought - Buddhadeb - will be absent.

"We won't discuss the Bengal civic polls," senior Politburo member Sitaram Yechury said.

Buddhadeb had chosen to stay away from the Politburo meeting even after the drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections, a move that was viewed by many as an expression of his differences with the central leadership.
