Gujarat Assembly Polls: 70 percent turnout in last phase

The voter turnout in the second and final phase of Gujarat assembly elections on Monday was 70 per cent. The turnout has been the same as that in the first phase of polling in the state on December 13.

Millions cast their ballot at 23,318 polling stations in Kutchh, north Gujarat and central Gujarat. Elections in the second phase were held in 95 of the 182 constituencies.

An estimated 19.8 million voters were eligible to vote in 95 of the 182 constituencies.  The Election Commission (EC) said earlier that 23,318 electronic voting machines would be used in as many polling stations, with 10,126 of them dubbed "critical" - an official euphemism to mean they could witness disturbances or violence.

The votes cast in Gujarat - along with those of Himachal Pradesh - will be counted on December 20.
