CPM leader Pinarayi to be prosecuted

It is yet another setback for the Kerala CPM, which is already grappling with its electoral debacle. Governor RS Gavai has overruled the state cabinet, and told the CBI to prosecute party state Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan.

Vijayan is the ninth accused in the multi-crore SNC Lavalin graft case. Now an embarrassed CPM state unit is groping for a way out of this situation.

“We will fight the case in court. The Government had concluded that Pinarayi Vijayan should not be prosecuted but since the Governor does not agree, we have no way but to take the case to court,” Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said.

The CPM continues to maintain that the case is politically motivated. A charge that has gained weight as the CPM is no longer a UPA-ally at the Centre, but Congress leaders rubbish the claim.

“The Governor has taken the decision after consulting legal experts. The Congress party has never tried to influence its decision,” Minister of State for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi said
